Basal Baby Playlist: Unexpected Kids Hits - Oldies Edition
by Annie Sartin
We are thrilled to share our new monthly playlist for kids (AND PARENTS). Music is an essential part of a well lived life. Music has the power to transform our mood, take us down memory lane, and tell the tale of humanity and culture throughout history. It is so intriguing and fun to discover the songs and genres that get our kiddos hearts racing and toes tapping.
When we began to conceptualize this series with our music contributor, Annie Sartin, one of our essential desires was to design playlists that are both fun and "educational." We want our generation of children to have the pleasure of knowing who The Beatles are, to appreciate the entire spectrum of musical genres, and from there refine their musical preferences and tastes. We want to make this mission easy for you too!
We are so excited to have Annie on board. She has the best and broadest musical taste of almost anyone we know and her daughter Millie, while only 3, has more favorite songs from various decades and genres than most adults. It's so fun watching them bond over music, and we think you will love them too!
Each month you can expect a new playlist from Annie + Millie, plus some tips for making the most of your musical journey with your kiddos!
There is no shortage of playlists geared towards children. A quick search on your favorite music player will end in countless lists with titles like “Kids Dance Party”, “Pop For Kids”, “Disney Favorites”, etc. Now, there is nothing wrong with these lists; they all serve a purpose and have a place in our kids lives. My personal issue with them is that they are impossible to listen to all the way through without wanting to lose your mind. I also don’t feel like kids should have all the power all the time, which means learning to share, even when it comes to speaker space.
So how do you find songs that your kids like that you will like too?
You pay attention. Play music of all genres and decades and look for clues that your kids are into it. I’m always surprised by the songs that my daughter, Millie (3.5), likes – it’s often way different than what I’ve tried to push on her. This week’s playlist is a list of all of the songs that unexpectedly struck a nerve with Millie and are now on heavy rotation in our home. Coincidently, they are all oldies, which surprised and delighted me.
Hope your family enjoys as much as we do!
